OVIPOSITING

With her ovipositor firmly punctured into the wood, this Magicicada will lay between 5 to 30 eggs into the nest pocket.

Note the egg damage alongside the female above as she makes another new nest of her own.  This particular tree received heavy damage as did many other trees nearby.

Groups of female Magicicadas converge on many branches and begin their egg laying frenzy usually a couple of weeks after the first emergence.  Each female can make up to 30 egg nests or more and often select younger trees and saplings.  When thousands of individuals gather, the egg damage can sometimes take a heavy toll on the host tree.

An egg nest takes approximately 20 minutes to create.  Once a nest is completed, the female will move up the branch an inch or less and begin another.  She may make as many as a dozen to a single branch, if left undisturbed. Note the splintered wood behind her.

Magicicada females such as this, may lay between 400 to 600 eggs.

This female Magicicada is preparing to stab her ovipositor into a branch.  Note the spear like ovipositor descending from the base of her abdomen.

Generally, branches with the thickness of a pencil are selected for depositing their egg nests.  This female has made several nests already.
